Tue, 16 Mar 2010 09:25:22 -0400 The "Tea Party" circuit seemed to have cooled a bit until recent happenings. The Massachusetts election for a seat in the U.S. Senate went to Republican Scott Brown — a seat long held by the late Democrat Sen. Ted Kennedy. And Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska, rallied the "partiers" during their "convention." Now Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, has embraced the Tea Party movement.

iCitizenForum: FCC public policy change: care to comment on the future of media? Wed, 03 Mar 2010 18:00:51 -0400 One of the ways we can contribute to the discussion of public policy comes with the chance to comment to federal regulatory agencies.

Unfortunately, most of us do not. And part of the problem is that unless you pay close attention to the alphabet soup of agency acronyms and their business, it’s hard to know they want your opinion. Most of us don’t spend a lot of time reading the Federal Register.

I do know that events on Sept. 11, 2001, have made it more difficult.

But it would seem that “the academy” would offer a place where we might escape discrimination based on how someone dresses.

iCitizenForum: Does the U.S. deserve a 'rich country' moniker? Thu, 11 Feb 2010 17:24:41 -0400 The relief effort in Haiti continues with the United States at the forefront. A recent news story got me to thinking about how countries get labeled “rich” or “poor.”

The article focused on how “rich” countries, such as the United States, bear the burden of doing more to help countries such as Haiti when trouble strikes. I wondered how someone could conclude that a country in excess of $11 trillion in debt deserves to fall into the “rich” category.

Terrorists? Does the reach of the flag-wrapped first ten amendments extend to a radical Nigerian Muslim like Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, charged with trying to blow up an airplane flying from Amsterdam to Detroit? He’s not even a citizen of the United States. Just what claim does he have to the Bill’s red-white-and-blue benefits to begin with?
