Learn more about the Fifes & Drums
The Sound of History
The Fifes and Drums were essential communication tools during the 18th century, guiding soldiers through battle with music that structured their day and signaled important messages. Boys aged 10 to 18, dressed as non-combatants, played a fifer and drummer, providing order in the chaos of war with tunes like "To Arms," "Cease Fire," and "Retreat." Colonial Williamsburg has preserved this tradition since 1958, welcoming both young men and women while maintaining period-accurate uniforms and music. Older students mentor newer ones, ensuring the program stays faithful to its origins. Listening to their performance offers a powerful, timeless connection to our military and musical heritage.
