Williamsburg Farmers Market marks sixth anniversary July 5 with chef demonstrations

The Williamsburg Farmers Market celebrates its sixth anniversary with the Virginia Chefs’ Association’s annual demonstration Saturday, July 5 from 8 a.m. to noon. Some of the finest chefs from the Williamsburg area will participate in the four-hour cook-off, crafting spur-of-the-moment culinary creations using fresh items from the Farmers Market.

Chef Renny Parziale, chairman of the Virginia Chefs’ Association, will provide eight chefs with a mystery basket of ingredients from the market. Each chef then has 20 minutes to prepare an unplanned dish. The cook-off will proceed in a ‘round-robin’ format, allowing onlookers to watch each chef work their magic in turn. Spectators are invited to sample the results. Each chef will be available to answer questions following their demonstration.

The Chefs Tent has long been a staple of the Williamsburg Farmers Market, providing guests the opportunity to learn how to prepare items from the Market and sample seasonal food.

The Williamsburg Farmers Market was established for growers and producers of Eastern Virginia to sell fresh seasonal food and farm products directly to the residents and guests in the Greater Williamsburg area. Many of Williamsburg’s premiere restaurants, including the Regency Room at the Williamsburg Inn, Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and the Blue Talon Bistro, regularly stock their pantries with finds from the Farmers Market.

Parking is available at the Prince George Street garage for $1 an hour. The Francis Street parking lot will continue to be free on Saturdays until noon. All other lots are posted as one- or two-hour parking.

The founding sponsors of the Williamsburg Farmers Market include The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Merchants Square Association and the City of Williamsburg. Additional sponsors for 2008 are: the Riverside Hospital System with marketing support; Towne Bank, sponsors of the Chef’s Tent; and Ukrop’s Super Markets, which supports musical entertainment.
