Lewis and Clark visit Macy's on Herald Square

Colonial Williamsburg’s executive chef Rhys Lewis and floral designer Clark Taggart will participate in the 2009 Macy’s Flower Show® and Petacular Fair® taking place at the flagship store on Herald Square at 34th and Broadway in New York City between April 5 and 19.

Taggart returns to the event for the third year, giving a presentation on how to create a variety of simple yet elegant flower arrangements that exemplify the distinctive Colonial Williamsburg style. Lewis is making his second appearance, giving a cooking demonstration featuring American cuisine inspired by contemporary Southern and Chesapeake flavors.

Taggart and Lewis will appear in Macy’s Cellar Kitchen, where a Colonial Williamsburg garden will be set up throughout Macy’s Flower Show from April 5 – 19. The garden, prepared by Macy’s floral design team in consultation with Laura Viancour, Colonial Williamsburg’s coordinator of garden programs, will capture the spirit and character of an authentic 18th-century garden, with herbs and ornamental plants. Viancour also worked with Macy’s in developing content about colonial gardens for informative flip-books posted at the display.

Colonial gardens varied from functional kitchen gardens of vegetables and herbs and ornamental gardens with flowers and shrubs. The garden at Macy’s will include lavender, rosemary, daffodils and hyacinths.

Macy’s Flower Show garden displays will feature more than one million bulbs and 30,000 varieties of flowering plants and trees from six continents; the event draws more than 500,000 visitors to the famous department store each year. To kick off the festivities, on Sunday April 5, Macy’s Petacular Fair® will take over the streets of Herald Square. Featured this year will be a “Living History Square” with Colonial Williamsburg performers and trades people. From the popular “Grand Medley of Entertainments,” the Strong Man Act, Juggler and Pirate Puppet Show will perform and interact with the crowd between performances. Representing Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Trades, the Chocolatemaker and Wigmaker will be on hand to demonstrate their crafts.

Members of the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums also will perform on the square. The Fifes and Drums participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 2008.
