CW reports strong results in admissions, fund raising, hospitality

Colonial Williamsburg reported total admissions for 2001 of 931,000, an increase of two-tenths of one percent over 929,000 in 2000. Visitation to Colonial Williamsburg fell nearly 30 percent in the first few weeks following the events of September 11 but regained momentum later in the fall and was particularly strong through the holiday season. As a result of increased sales of annual passes versus one-day passes, total revenue from 2001 ticket sales was $23 million, up three percent from $22.2 million in 2000.

The Colonial Williamsburg Fund, a core component of the foundation’s annual fund-raising efforts, received a record $10.7 million in cash gifts given by 96,952 donors in 2001. These figures represent an 11 percent increase over the previous record of $9.6 million in cash gifts and an 11 percent increase over the previous record of 87,338 donors, both set in 2000.

Overall, Colonial Williamsburg experienced its second best fund-raising year in 2001 with total gifts and grants of $38.9 million. The foundation’s all-time record was set in 2000 with total gifts and grants of $46.8 million, including gifts totaling more than $15 million from Bill and Gretchen Kimball of Belvedere, Calif. At year-end, gifts to Colonial Williamsburg’s comprehensive fund-raising campaign, the Campaign for Colonial Williamsburg, stood at $275 million, 55 percent of its goal of raising $500 million by December 2005.

Colonial Williamsburg’s hospitality operations were focused during much of the year on the extensive renovations of the Williamsburg Inn, construction of the new Woodlands Hotel & Suites, and the events of September 11 and their aftermath. The Inn and Woodlands projects were completed during the third quarter. December hotel and restaurant patronage returned to historical levels with especially strong growth in the leisure segment. Call volume from people interested in future reservations finished the year strongly.

Campbell, president and chairman of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. "That we were able to rebound so strongly after September 11 underscores the relevance of Colonial Williamsburg in today’s world, and the importance, two centuries later, of the lessons taught by Williamsburg’s earliest residents. I am grateful for the commitment and dedication of the foundation staff, and the support of our visitors and our generous benefactors who led the way to these encouraging results."
