Home Educators Enjoy New Programs in the Revolutionary City, Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

During Colonial Williamsburg’s Homeschooler Experience program, Sept. 8-23, participants experience the Revolutionary City as a hands-on classroom with activities especially for home educators.

Homeschoolers and other guests to the Revolutionary City can play this year’s new alternate reality spy game, RevQuest: The Lion and the Unicorn, Tuesdays through Saturdays. This interactive adventure highlights citizenship, the American Revolution and 18th-century society of Williamsburg.

The Revolutionary City offers guests the opportunity to become part of the two-day saga as the city illustrates the days, months and years leading up to and during the Revolutionary War. Families meet townspeople, tradespeople, shopkeepers, political figures, women and slaves, and learn of their hopes, struggles and fears in these uncertain times. The Revolutionary City is offered daily throughout the town.

New for homeschoolers this year in the Revolutionary City is:

The Weaver’s Apprentice, 9:30 a.m., Sept. 8, 15 and 22, Weave Shop. Families visit the weaver and learn the trade of producing colonial cloth during this hands-on activity. This one-hour program is recommended for children ages eight to 14. All children must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. A $15 ticket is required.

Music, Singing and Hymns: Can you name that melody? 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and 16, Benjamin Powell House. In the 18th-century lyrics are not always attached to the tunes that are known so well today. Listen to the verses and music of the past, and join in the singing! A $5 ticket is required.

A variety of engaging programs take place in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Students can tour the various galleries and participate in hands-on activities. New this year are:

How Much Does that Cost? 10:30 a.m., Sept. 12 and 19. Guests decide how to spend their 18th-century budget for food, lodging and entertainment. Materials included. An additional $3 ticket is necessary.

Tiki Tiki Tembo Goes to the Museum, 10:30 a.m., Sept. 13 and 20. Young guests hear the classic story, “Tiki Tiki Tembo,” explore the museum galleries for art inspired by China and make an Asian-inspired object to take home.

Lucy Locket Lost Her Pocket, 1:45 p.m., Sept. 13 and 20. Guests find out how Lucy lost her pocket during a tour of the exhibition, “Fashion Accessories Head to Toe,” and make an 18th-century pocket.

Spy Craft, 1:45 p.m., Sept. 14 and 21, DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Homeschoolers can try their hand at reading and writing secret messages.

Families can purchase special admission passes and save in advance of the Homeschooler Experience. This ticket includes admission to the Revolutionary City exhibition sites, including the Capitol, Governor’s Palace, trade shops, homes and the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.
