Acclaimed "Jefferson and Adams" returns to CW's Kimball Theatre for encore performances

The compelling story of two renowned American Founding Fathers – Thomas Jefferson and John Adams – returns to the Kimball Theatre for encore performances of “Jefferson and Adams” in July and August. The play features Colonial Williamsburg’s renowned character historian Bill Barker as Jefferson, seasoned Colonial Williamsburg character interpreter Abigail Schumann as Abigail Adams and the popular Sam Goodyear, a long-standing favorite with Kimball Theatre audiences, as John Adams.

Performances will take place 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 16; 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 17; and 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27. General admission is $12; senior and student tickets are $10.

Written by Howard Ginsberg and directed by Doug Anderson, the story communicates the spirit of the time and the central events that shaped American, and world, history. Based on correspondence between the prolific Jefferson, Adams and Adams’ wife, Abigail, between 1776 and 1826, “Jefferson and Adams” fuses political thought with passionate personal belief.

“The play reveals the turbulent real life friendship and often heated arguments between Adams and Jefferson over a 50-year span,” said Barker. “It is their core ideas and beliefs that remain the basis of our American identity even today,” said Barker. In a remarkable coincidence, both of these leading American statesmen who influenced political thinking so profoundly died on the same day – July 4, 1826 – exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Kimball Theatre, located in downtown Williamsburg’s Merchants Square, is owned and operated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the not-for-profit educational institution that operates the restored 18th-century capital of Virginia. The Kimball Theatre offers live performances and art films seven days each week. For theater program information, call (757) 565-8217.
