Old Stitch named best brown ale in mid-Atlantic-south division / Beer brewed for Colonial Williamsburg by AleWerks Brewing Company

Colonial Williamsburg’s Old Stitch Brown Ale has taken first place in the United States Beer Tasting Championship’s 20th annual competition in Manchester, N.H. The competition included an examination of 580 beers in 15 different categories from 151 breweries. Old Stitch was judged in the Mid Atlantic/South division.

Old Stitch is made for Colonial Williamsburg by AleWerks Brewing Company. The rich brown ale has a malty flavor with hints of coffee and chocolate and pairs well with beef, pork and chocolate. It is based upon a recipe found in a brewing manual written anonymously in London in 1737.

Frank Clark, supervisor of Historic Foodways, worked with the AleWerks brew master to create the flavors described in the brewing manual: “For brewing strong brown ale called stitch, this is mostly the first runnings of the malt but yet a longer length than is drawn off for stout.”

“In other words,” said Clark, “It was a weaker version of what the manual calls a brown stout beer that was probably eight percent alcohol. Mixing beers was very common during this time period and is how porter got its start.”

Old Stitch is served in all Colonial Williamsburg historic taverns and Inn and Lodge restaurants and is available for sale by the bottle and six-pack in Colonial Williamsburg retail outlets.
