WILLIAMSBURG by Nichols & Stone will be introduced this week at the October 2003 International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C. Like its namesakes, this licensed, co-marketed collection of case goods represents a rich American heritage of design and craftsmanship. Unlike the majority of offerings being introduced at the fall market, however, this is an all-American effort – designed and crafted in the U.S.A.

WILLIAMSBURG by Nichols & Stone is a 36-piece case goods collection with multi-generational appeal. The pieces themselves invoke a whisper of the past, yet they also speak to a contemporary lifestyle. Bedroom and dining pieces in the collection are extremely versatile, and can be used effectively in virtually all rooms of the house, including the great room, library, media room and foyer.

WILLIAMSBURG® is synonymous with the best of classic American design, while Nichols & Stone has been a well respected source of traditional, American-made solid wood furniture for nearly 200 years. Together, they are putting a fresh, new face on home décor with the creation of furniture that is inspired by classic design elements.

Though drawn from design principles of the 18th century -- a golden age of design – WILLIAMSBURG by Nichols & Stone is not a collection of antique reproductions, but rather a creation of forms that meet the functional requirements of 21st-century homes, and should appeal to consumers looking for something different – high quality yet uncontrived solid wood furnishings and exclusive custom finishes that complement a casual, relaxed decorating style and a busy lifestyle.

“This collection has a definite point of view,” said Beth Moore, director of marketing for the Colonial Williamsburg products division. “It is designed for the consumer with a clear sense of personal style and an uncompromising standard of quality. Even more significantly, the piece-by-piece mode of decorating, where each design can be mixed and matched according to personal taste, is a very contemporary approach to home décor and provides consumers with a more natural way to ‘dress’ their homes.”

Tuck Nichols, president of Nichols & Stone, is enthusiastic about the response the collection has received to date. “The concept of bringing together two of the most highly respected names in the furniture industry is an intriguing one for our retail partners,” said Nichols. “Our customers are looking for a well designed, high quality collection that not only has style and personality but also merchandises well on the floor. At a time when the furniture industry continues to increase the level of sourcing from offshore manufacturers, Nichols feels that it never has been more important to stress the inherent value of high quality furniture made in America. “The majority of pieces in WILLIAMSBURG by Nichols & Stone will be made here in the U.S.A.,” he said. “We are not resisting the import tide, but we choose to address the wants and needs of a customer who clearly respects the value and integrity of solid wood and American craftsmanship.”

The oldest furniture company still in operation in the United States, Nichols & Stone originally began operations in 1762 as the Nichols Brothers Chair Company in Westminster, Mass. Its headquarters have been in Gardner, Mass., since the early 1900s. Carlton “Tuck” Nichols, current president and chief executive officer, has been with the company since 1968. He is the eighth generation of the Nichols family to lead the company and advance its heritage of handcrafting fine furniture in the United States.

The WILLIAMSBURG Products program, established in 1936, provides authentic reproductions of antique furnishings and accessories as well as casual lifestyle collections, both of which reflect the rich decorative arts traditions of the 18th century.
