CW online map exhibition earns distinction at 10th annual Webby Awards

“Mapping Colonial America,” an online museum exhibit created by Colonial Williamsburg’s Department of Internet, earned recognition today as an Official Honoree of the 10th annual Webby Awards. The designation places the exhibit website in the top 20 percent of more than 5,500 entries from more than 40 countries and all 50 states.

Established in 1996 and hailed as the “online Oscars” by Time Magazine, the Webby Awards--the leading international award honoring excellence in web design, functionality and creativity--are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 500-member global organization of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities. The Official Honoree designation is reserved for the five best entries in each of more than 65 categories.

“Mapping Colonial America” is an online version of an extensive exhibition at Colonial Williamsburg’s DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and is a companion to the book, “Degrees of Latitude: Mapping Colonial America,” by Margaret Beck Pritchard and Henry G. Taliaferro.

“The Webby attests to the creativity, attention to detail and hard work by our web design team,” said Robyn Eoff, Colonial Williamsburg’s director of internet. “We’re pleased that the excellence of the online exhibit was evident to the judges.” To view the on-line exhibit, visit http://www.history.org/maps.

“The Webby Awards honors the outstanding web sites that are setting the standards for the internet,” said Tiffany Shlain, founder of the Webby Awards. “Official Honoree selection for Colonial Williamsburg’s ‘Mapping Colonial America” website is a testament to the skill, ingenuity and vision of its creators.”

The 2006 Webby Award winners will be honored at a gala event at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street on June 12.
