Colonial Williamsburg Receives Awards For Dining And Golf

Colonial Williamsburg’s Regency Room has been named to the 2006 Fine Dining Hall of Fame and joins nine restaurants located across the country on this year’s list. Each year, Nation’s Restaurant News welcomes a select number of outstanding restaurants into its Fine Dining Hall of Fame. Condé Nast Traveler has named the Williamsburg Inn and Golden Horseshoe Golf courses to its reader’s poll of top 100 golf resorts in the world, the magazine announced in the June 2006 issue.

In naming the Regency Room to the Hall of Fame, Nation’s Restaurant News cited the rich tradition and history of the Regency Room, its opulent, stately interior with crystal chandeliers, silk draperies, and palm-leaved columns, and the subtle adherence to its Virginia location reflected in the menu and the Southern hospitality of the staff. The Regency Room has hosted world leaders, movie stars and royalty, but it is most well known for a history of serving multiple generations dining at the same table.

“We are catering to returning guests with the rich traditions we maintain and also to a new clientele aware of all the trends that are out there today,” said the Inn’s general manager Nicholas DiMeglio commenting on the award. “We have to be sure we serve favorites such as crabmeat Randolph and specialty desserts that have been on the menu for 25 or 30 years, while at the same time introducing new items popular today.”

“We cook for our guests,” said executive chef Hans Schadler, who describes his cooking style as “very simple and very clean. We don’t let our egos get in the way.” The Regency Room menu includes fresh fish from the Chesapeake Bay, French-inspired dishes like Châteaubriand with sauce béarnaise, as well as Virginia Eastern Shore rockfish and Southern pecan pie.

Maintaining a reputation for Southern hospitality and service is important to Williamsburg native DiMeglio. “It’s humbling when I think of the history of the Regency Room and the guests who have come through the doors over the years. We’re constantly looking at new ways to blend the different worlds better. We want guests from around the world and around the corner to return again and again to the Regency Room. The road to perfection is always under construction.”

Condé Nast Traveler’s 11th annual golf resorts survey ranks the Williamsburg Inn and the Golden Horseshoe courses 51st in its reader’s pole of top 100 golf resorts in the world. The ranking includes such features as overall course design, speed of play, accommodations, service, dining and overall facilities.

“We are proud to be recognized among the great golf resorts in the world,” said Glen Byrnes, director of golf for the Golden Horseshoe. “The ranking recognizes the commitment our entire team has made to our guests. It’s not just the beautiful course, but the facilities, the service, the dining and the overall experience.”

The ranking places the Williamsburg Inn in the company of some of the most famous names in golf resorts in Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Central America and across the continental United States. The three golf courses of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club are public courses, but club membership offers preferred rates for cart rentals, guest fees, and weekend tee times; discounts in the pro shop, club storage, unlimited play and social and competitive events.

The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club includes 45 holes on the first side-by-side father-son courses designed by golf course architects Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Rees Jones and will host the men’s 2007 NCAA Division I championship tournament in the spring of 2007.
