New WILLIAMSBURG® retail store opens in largest convention resort on Eastern Seabord

The Colonial Williamsburg Products Division announced a cooperative venture with Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center to open a store in its new Washington, D.C., complex, the largest convention resort on the Eastern Seaboard.

"We are delighted to have launched this initiative at Gaylord National Resort,” said Jim Easton, vice president of products for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “It provides us with a tremendous opportunity to market both WILLIAMSBURG® product and the destination appeal of Colonial Williamsburg."

Colonial Williamsburg assisted in the design of the 650-square-foot store which is a colonial-inspired freestanding structure within the atrium of the resort. The WILLIAMSBURG Shop offers a selection of WILLIAMSBURG-branded gifts, food and tavern items, jewelry, Byers’ Choice collectibles and books, as well as seasonal items and children’s gifts.

In addition, Colonial Williamsburg’s brochures and catalogs are available in The WILLIAMSBURG Shop and throughout Gaylord National Resort. A short video on Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area and Museums is shown continuously in The WILLIAMSBURG Shop to encourage
guest visits. The store also has an information kiosk display with a direct computer link to Colonial Williamsburg’s Web site at www.history.org, enabling shoppers to purchase admission passes or program tickets, make lodging reservations and access www.williamsburgmarketplace.com to shop online and place orders.

“This presents a new type of marketing outreach for us, utilizing a satellite location tied to our successful products line enabling direct access to consumers inclined toward the Williamsburg brand,” said Edward Allmann, director of marketing for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Located along the banks of the Potomac River in National Harbor, Md., Gaylord National is less than eight miles south of the nation's capitol. The Gaylord National Resort offers 2,000 guest rooms and more than 470,000 square feet of convention, meeting and exhibit pace. National Harbor is a new 300-acre waterfront community located in Prince George's County, Md.

The Colonial Williamsburg Products Program includes 60 licensees producing more than 7,000 products under the WILLIAMSBURG and WILLIAMSBURG Reserve brands. It operates 24 retail stores, a mail-order catalog and an e-commerce site. Sales of WILLIAMSBURG products support the preservation, research and educational programs of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Established in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is the not-for-profit educational institution that preserves and operates the restored 18th-century Revolutionary capital of Virginia as a town-sized living history museum, telling the inspirational stories of our nation’s founding men and women. Within the restored and reconstructed buildings, historic interpreters, attired as colonial men and women from slaves to shopkeepers to soldiers, relate stories of colonial Virginia society and culture – stories of our journey to become Americans – while historic trades people research, demonstrate and preserve the 18th-century world of work and industry. As Colonial Williamsburg interprets life in the time of the American Revolution for its guests, it also invites them to interact with history. “Revolutionary City®,” a dramatic live street theater presentation, is a 2008 Rand McNally Best-of-the-Road™ Editor’s Pick. Williamsburg is located in Virginia’s Tidewater region, 20 minutes from Newport News, within an hour’s drive of Richmond and Norfolk, and 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., off Interstate 64.
