Virginia Indian Participation in Rev. War

"Land, Liberty, and Loyalties: Indigenous Participation and Perspectives on the American Revolution in Tidewater Virginia" This presentation seeks to situate the audience within the indigenous landscape of Tidewater Virginia during the 18th century by exploring the challenges individual Tribal citizens had to make and how they questioned their loyalties to protect their treaty rights and their land. From students, to soldiers, to widows, this presentation reveals how Tribal citizens navigated their livelihood amid profound social and political pressures of the time.

Katie Gibson is a public historian and Research Associate with Kenah Consulting from King William County, Virginia. She holds a Bachelor's degree in History from William & Mary and a Master's degree in History from Virginia Tech. In her free time, Katie serves as Vice President of the King William County Historical Society and a Board member of the West Point Historical Society among other various committees. Katie also formerly worked as the Archive and Collections Specialist with the Mattaponi Indian Tribe and Reservation.
