Raleigh Concert: Virginian Vices & Beggar’s Opera

“The Beggar’s Opera” was one of the most popular ballad operas of the 18th century and was performed at least 3 times in Williamsburg from 1768 to 1772; George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were both in attendance during their time in town. 

A piece riddled with controversy, “The Beggar’s Opera” lays its focus upon the criminal underside of London, with a reminder from the titular Beggar that vices are enjoyed amongst all levels of society.
