Highlight From the Collection

Silver Kiddush Cup

This silver Kiddush cup was the first piece of silver Judaica to be added to the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Representing a faith that was more prevalent in early America than most people realize today, Kiddush cups are used both as part of family worship at home and as part of congregational worship in the Jewish religion. Used while reciting the blessing over wine (the Kiddush or “sanctification”), the Kiddush cup is part of the commandment from the Torah to consecrate the Sabbath (Shabbat) or a festival such as Passover. See this object, and learn more amazing stories behind silver objects in Silver from Mine to Masterpiece at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the newly expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.

Conservation

Before an artifact or antiquity reaches Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area or our Art Museums, it is analyzed, examined, treated, and documented by a team of conservation professionals, interns, and volunteers. Conservators work hand in hand with curators to preserve the cultural property in the Colonial Williamsburg collections.
